Performance Study

The American Black Hereford Association in conjunction with Cedar Hill Cattle, Inc., of Howells, Nebraska compare Black Hereford sired steers with Angus and red Hereford sired steers on Black Angus cattle. The results demonstrated that the Black Hereford sired steers had an average daily gain of 3.93 compared with 3.65 with the Hereford sired and 3.28 with the Angus sired (heterosis advantage). Also, the Black Hereford sired steers were 71% choice and 29% select, while the Hereford sired steers were 52% choice and 48% select, and the Angus sired steers were 75% choice and 23% select (marbling and performance).

This demonstrates what the Black Hereford Association and Jo Bulls is trying to develop in our cattle. We want the advantages of heterosis from using Black Hereford crossed with Angus, but we also want to increase the performance and marbling. The Black Hereford breed accomplishes both.

In addition, the Black Hereford Association is requiring strict DNA testing to ensure that the known genetic defects of the Angus and Hereford breeds are not passed into the Black Hereford breed.
