Cattle

We have been operating a commercial ranch for five generations. My grandpa Eugene Johansen ran 250 head. He had two sons Craig and Scott. Approximately 30 years ago, Craig started developing a registered red Hereford operation in addition to the commercial cattle. He was very careful to select only the best Line 1 genetics. His herd is heavily influenced by Holden Herefords, Cooper Herefords, Baker Herefords, Ft. Keogh, Rock Creek Herefords, Oxley Herefords, and Carlson Herefords. He and his sons continue to operate the red Hereford side, and Scott (my dad) and I are operating the Black Hereford side. You can visit the red Johansen Hereford website as follows:

As we started to transition to Black Hereford, we built upon the base Line 1 genetics. However, we discovered that a lot of our customers desired the polled genetics. We decided to add some polled cattle and introduced some Remitall and Felton lines.

We are taking these great red Hereford lines and ingesting the black hide to them through our bulls. We then take the black offspring and breed them back to homozygous bulls. As this process continues, we will be able to produce a greater number of homozygous offspring.
